History

In the year 1990, we started our search to find the most effective probiotic bacteria

BioGaia was founded over three decades ago by Peter Rothschild and Jan Annwall At that time, Peter and Jan imported organic vegetables and exclusive yogurt from France to Sweden but they were concerned about the short shelf-life. They began investigating the possibility of using good bacteria on organic vegetables to see if these bacteria could help extend their shelf-life.

Soon they came across the bacteria species, Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly known as Lactobacillus reuteri), and realized that this species was useful for other applications than preserving vegetables. These scientific discoveries led Peter and Jan to acquire the commercial rights to the strain and conduct further research into the effects of L. reuteri and their potential benefits for humans.

Today, BioGaia’s products, based on L. reuteri bacterial strains, are among the most scientifically validated globally, with hundreds of clinical studies and over 250 published articles. This would not have been possible without the extensive research network that BioGaia has built with scientists from leading universities and hospitals worldwide. Currently, BioGaia’s patented probiotic products are sold in over 100 countries.
